Staff Worker

Rob attended Curtin University and did a Business degree following which he worked in Administration and Finance for about 6 years. Sensing the need to be better equipped to serve God, he went to Trinity Theological College in Perth to do a BTh and while studying there part-time, served in youth ministry in various churches for a number of years. In 2002 he was approached to be the OCF Curtin Advisor and with the completion of his training the following year, he was employed as the OCFWA staffworker, a position which he filled for 4 years.
At the end of 2006, Rob and his wife, Cathy made the decision to move to Sydney to be nearer to her family as well as to take up a new ministry job with the mission agency Pioneers of Australia. He currently in that role 3 days/week and works 1day/week as staffworker with OCF Sydney.

I first got acquainted with Rob in July 2007 when he first attended one of our Bible study sessions at the UNSW group, together with Vincent and Mary Chin. Back then, I was just a normal member. What I initially thought would be a casual visit from someone who had prior experience with OCF, turned out to be a potential staffworker for the UNSW group. I came to learn later during the year that Rob Robayna would work alongside Esther Lukabyo, then the current staffworker, and would eventually take up this role of staffworker for OCF Sydney when Esther left.

The term “staff worker” was foreign to me until I came to Australia. “Who and what is a staff worker?” I often asked. Even though I got answers from other people to satisfy my own curiosity, nothing beats having a personal experience with the man himself Roberto Robayna. Rob as he is fondly known has indeed been a blessing to me especially when Macquarie OCF was initiated in August 2007. Rob and I had several conversations to get to know one another better, as well as aligning of vision and aims of OCF, as pioneering works were in the pipeline for a new centre at Macquarie back then. The Lord brought to us a handful of non-Christian overseas students, and our strategy was to build friendships and connections with them. Rob was able to connect with them well and even organised several sporting games. Great, I thought. I am not alone in establishing Macquarie OCF after all. Rob was there, to guide and mentor me throughout. I am beginning to like this idea of a staff worker!
